League Overview
The Indianola Youth Football League, Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to providing the youth of the Indianola School District and surrounding communities a quality tackle football program. A 12-15 person Board of Directors oversees league operations. Surrounding communities participating in the league operate their programs independently within league rules and regulations approved by the Board of Directors. The league’s primary objective is to teach participants the fundamentals of football, physical fitness, and sportsmanship. The program is focused on fundamental techniques and uses only basic football formations/plays.
Player registration for Indianola teams is conducted each spring to facilitate league planning and logistics. New players to the league are drafted onto one of Indianola’s eight teams after participating in a tryout that generally takes place in early August. The draft process enables the league to keep the Indianola teams at somewhat comparable skill levels. Once players are placed on a team, they will stay on that team throughout their IYFL career. IYFL teams begin practicing after a date established by the Board of Directors, normally in the middle of August. Each team generally consists of 22-26 players from fourth, fifth and sixth grades and is divided up into two squads. The Purple squad consists of fourth graders; the Gold squad consists of sixth graders. Fifth graders may play on either the Purple Squad or the Gold squad based on experience, skills and squad needs. Each squad plays two quarters of offense and defense in each game. The teams play five regular season games and one championship game (known as Super Bowl week-end). Indianola sixth graders are then divided into two teams at the end of the year and participate in a Pro Bowl game to celebrate their transition to junior high football. The Board of Directors attempts to maintain affordable fees for families. League fees are used to cover annual operating expenses and ensure quality player equipment, referees and facilities. The Board of Directors and coaches in the league are all volunteers.
We encourage fans of the IYFL to check our league schedule to find out where and when your favorite team plays.
